Winter Crossing: 23" x 65"
Handspun, un-dyed Churro wool
Commuting
by ferry once a week for four years between Vancouver Island and Washington
State's Olympic Peninsula, I grew familiar with that wild and vast stretch
of Pacific Ocean called the Juan de Fuca Strait.
Winter
crossings were particularly impressive, as sheets of rain, dense fog,
low-lying clouds, and dark water were the only things we could see out
the windows or from the deck. Series of storms lasted for weeks.
Spinning
and weaving Churro fleeces friends sent up to me from New Mexico reminded
me there were warmer and sunnier places in the world. This piece reflects
those winter crossings and one of the ways in which I maintained my connection
to the Southwest during those years. |
